Due to its location in the southernmost part of Sweden, Malmö is actually closer to Milan in Italy than to the northernmost Swedish town Kiruna. For centuries, Malmö was the second largest city in Denmark and it didn't become a part of Sweden until 1658. Even after that, border disputes continued between Sweden and Denmark well into the 18th century.
In the year 2000 the Öresund Bridge between Malmö and Copenhagen was inaugurated, connecting the two major cities and promoting commute between Sweden and Denmark. The bridge is almost five miles long, with the entire link totalling just under ten miles.
